Description
The Suite consists of seven sections:
- Lebedig Un Freilich (Lively and Happy). A fast dance form called a bulgar or freilach.
- Oyfn Prepichik (By the Fireside). A very well-known Yiddish song about the rabbi teaching the children their ABC by a fireside.
- Dem Tsadiks Zemer’l (The Wise Man’s Tune). This is in chosid’l form – a Hassidic dance in the same style as “If I Were a Rich Man” from the show Fiddler on the Roof.
- Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen. (Raisins and Almonds). A mother rocks her son and sings a Yiddish lullaby about his future. Another well-known song.
- Dave Tarras Doina. A spectacular clarinet solo in the form of a doina, which is an old Rumanian form. It is a type of lament very free in form.
- Der Gasn Nigun (The Street Tune). This song is in the form of a Rumanian hora in three.
- Der Heyser Bulgar (The Hot Bulgar). The suite ends with a fast and lively dance tune.
These can be mixed and matched, or played by themselves. In fact, the last three tunes – doina/hora/bulgar – form a traditional klezmer set that one my hear at a traditional Yiddish wedding.
