Description
Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier is one of opera’s great celebrations of love, youth, nostalgia, comedy, and the inexorable passage of time. This new suite for chamber orchestra, arranged by Michael Drapkin directly from the 1910 opera score, brings the extraordinary colors and sweeping gestures of Strauss’s orchestra to a more compact ensemble while preserving the character and spirit of the original.
Running approximately 18½ minutes and unfolding in seven sections, the suite traces a dramatic arc through some of the opera’s most memorable music. It begins with the exhilarating Einleitung, then moves through passages of radiant lyricism, elegance and humor, the operatic sweep of Di rigori armato, and Strauss’s irresistible Viennese waltzes.
The suite culminates not simply with a concert ending, but with music from the final pages of the opera itself, bringing the journey to an intimate and deeply satisfying conclusion.
The chamber orchestration retains the richness and brilliance of Strauss while making the work practical for smaller professional, university, festival, and community orchestras. The woodwind section is centered around flute, oboe, two clarinets and bassoon, with appropriate doublings, supported by brass, percussion and strings.
This is not an arrangement of the later concert suite. It was created directly from Strauss’s original 1910 score of the opera, allowing the selection and dramatic sequence of the music to follow its own path—including the rarely heard operatic conclusion.
